Li Yi is well known in China for his contemporary ink wash paintings which are considered a revolutionary technique breaking away from the old traditional ink wash paintings.  His ink wash paintings are an evolution of the traditional Chinese painting technique but at the same time preserves the unique sensibility of that traditional art form.  To be able to master the technique, the artist needs to refine his art work continuously for long periods of time.

Li Yi was born in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, where he received his training in fine arts and oil painting at an early age.  Later, he went to Beijing to study further at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts.  He learned traditional Chinese painting from the well known artists such as Zhang Ding, Lu Cheng and Han Guo Zhen.
