Terra Cotta Warrior - The Tomb was discovered in 1974

The Terra Cotta warriors were accidentally discovered by two Chinese farmers who were digging a well. Their discovery prompted archaeologists to proceed to Shaanxi, China to investigate.  What they found was the ancient burial-site of the first Chinese Emperor Qin Shihuangdi.  Before Qin, the masters of a household were buried with their wives, concubines, slaves, and their soldiers.  In place of these people, the Emperor Qin ordered a massive clay army to be produced for his protection. The Emperor Qin wanted the afterlife to be the same as his life on earth. He had fostered a warlike culture in China, and had created many enemies for himself. During his lifetime there were three attempts to assassinate him, Thus, he felt the need to be protected in his afterlife.

The discovery revealed that the Emperor Qin had a strong hold over Central China.  It also revealed China’s advanced state of porcelain manufacturing back nearly 2,000 years ago.
